Fermentation scale-up is the process of moving a microbial process from laboratory conditions (a few liters) to industrial production (tens of thousands of liters). It’s not simply a volume increase. It involves making the bioprocess robust, reproducible, and controllable, while managing quality, regulatory compliance, and production costs. Scale-up covers fermentation itself (USP), downstream processing (DSP), and when the final product is a powder, drying processes (lyophilization, spray-drying).
